General Writing Systems

alphabet noun
a set of letters in a particular order that are used for writing a language.

alphabetical adjective
arranged according to the order of letters in the alphabet.

alphabetise
a British spelling of alphabetize.

alphabetize verb
to put a list in alphabetical order.

block capitals noun
letters of the alphabet written in their large form, for example ‘A’ rather than ‘a’. Block capitals are often simply called capitals

the large form of a letter, for example ‘A’ or ‘B’, that you use at the beginning of a sentence or name.

capital adjective
a capital letter is the large form of a letter, for example ‘A’ or ‘B’, that you use at the beginning of a sentence or name.

consonant noun
a letter of the alphabet used as a symbol for a consonant All the letters of the English alphabet are consonants except for ‘a’, ‘e’, ‘i’, ‘o’, and ‘u’ , which are vowels
