Grades and Marks Given for School or University Work

A noun
a mark that a teacher gives to a student’s work to show that it is excellent.

B noun
a mark that is given in a school, college, or university for work that is a little better than average.

C noun
a mark that a teacher gives to a student’s work to show that it is average.

D noun
a mark that a teacher gives to a student’s work to show that it is below average.

demerit noun
mainly American a mark or record that shows someone has done something wrong.

distinction noun
British a very high mark in an examination.

E noun

F noun

A minus B minus C minus D minus
marks given by teachers for students’ work that are lower than the marks A, B, C, and D. These marks are usually written ‘A-’, ‘B-’ etc.

A plus B plus C plus D plus
a mark given by a teacher for a student’s work that is higher than a mark A, B, C, and D. These marks are usually written A+, B+ etc.
