Styles of Dancing

ballroom dancing noun
a type of dancing done by a man and woman together, using a fixed series of steps and movements. Ballroom dances include the waltz , the quickstep , and the tango.

body popping noun
music a type of dancing to modern popular music in which people move with very stiff movements, as if they are robots . This style of dancing was popular in the 1980s.

breakdancing noun
a type of fast dancing, especially done on the street, that often includes spinning your body around on the ground.

cheerleading noun
in the US, the activity of being a cheerleader at a sports event.

country dancing noun
British a traditional type of dancing in which people dance with a partner, moving in lines and circles as part of a larger group.

folk dance noun
a traditional dance from a particular region or community.

formal noun
American a dance to which people wear formal clothes.

line dancing noun
a style of dancing from the western US done by a group of people who stand in rows and all do the same movements.

morris dancing noun
traditional English country dancing that is performed outside by men wearing clothes that have small bells fixed to them.

tap noun
informal tap dancing.

tap dancing noun
a style of dancing in which you move your feet very quickly and make sounds with the special shoes that you wear.

belly dancing noun
       a sensuous and provocative dance of Middle Eastern origin, performed by women, with undulating movements of the hips and abdomen

folk dancing noun
       any of various traditional rustic dances often originating from festivals or rituals.

cheek to cheek
if people dance cheek to cheek, they dance holding each other very close with the sides of their faces touching.
