Attribute sth to sb/sth

*To believe that something is the result of a particular situation, event, or person’s actions: Her teachers attributed her learning difficulties to emotional problems.

*To believe or say that a situation or event is caused by something: The fall in the number of deaths from heart disease is generally attributed to improvements in diet.

*(attribute sth to someone) To believe or say that something was written, said, painted etc. by a particular person: Marcello’s work was at first attributed to his brother Benedetto. # Quotes attributed to him have been taken out of context.

*If people in general attribute a particular statement, painting, piece of music etc. to someone, they believe that person said it, painted it, etc.: A saying usually attributed to Confucius.

*To say or think that something is the result or work of something or someone else: The doctors have attributed the cause of the illness to an unknown virus. # To what do you attribute this delay? # Most experts have attributed the drawing to Michelangelo.
