*To give an explanation for something bad that
has happened, especially something that you are responsible for: You will be brought before the disciplinary
panel to account for your behaviour. # How do you account for this sudden
improvement in his test scores?
*To explain the reason for something or the
cause of something: Can you account for
you absence last Friday? # She was unable to account for over $5000. (=she
could not explain were the money was) # He has to account to his manager for
(=tell his manager and explain) all his movements.
