Act on/upon sth
*To do something because you have been given
information, advice, or orders: I’m
acting on the advice of my lawyers. # They were acting on the instructions of
senior managers.
*To do something because of another person’s
advice or order, or because you have received information or had an idea: She is acting on the advice of her lawyers.
# Police say they acted on information received.
*To take an action as a result of advice,
information, etc.: Acting on information
from a member of the public, the police raided the club. # Why didn’t you act
on her suggestion?
*If you act on or act upon advice or
information, you do what has been advised or suggested. Act upon is more
formal: Why didn’t you act on my warning?
# They were content to provide information on which others could act. # The
recommendation coul not, for reasons of finance, be fully acted on. # Acting
upon his advice. # We must use these powers and act upon them.
