Ask for sb/sth
*To say that you want someone to come and speak
to you: There’s someone in the shop asking for the manager.
*If you ask for something, you say that
youwould like to have it: She asked for a drink of water. # The publisher asked
for time to think it over. # Send it bby recorded delivery and ask for a
receipt.
=REQUEST (more formal)
*If you ask for someone, you want to speak to
them: There’s someone at the door asking for Dad.
*If you ask for someone when you are making
phone call, you say that you would like to speak to them: Call the town hall
and ask for the pest controller. # He rang the office and asked for Cynthia.
*To say that you want to speak to someone or be
directed to a place: When you arrive, ask for Jane.
*To say that you would like to see or speak to
someone: A young man was here asking for you this morning.
*(be
asking for something) To behave in a way that makes it likely that a
particular unpleasant thing will happen to you: She’s asking for trouble
speaking to people like that. # Anyone who drives while they’re drunk is just
asking for it.
