PV - Ask for sth

Ask for sth

*To speak or write to someone because you want them to give you something: He’s always reluctant to ask for anyone’s help.

*If you say that something is asking for something unpleasant such as punishment, trouble, or other problem, or if you say that they are asking for it, you mean that they behave in a way that makes it more likely or possible for those things to occur: To plan a route all in one go was asking for trouble. It was obviously a better idea to do it in bits. # He had no business crawling out the dark. He was batty. He asked for it. # When I reported the attack they said ‘Are you sure you didn’t ask for it?’

*If you say you couldn’t ask for someone or something better you mean that that person or thing is the best of their kind: She’s great to work for –I really couldn’t ask for a better boss.
