*To increase the level of something, especially demands or sums or money: His ex-wife has upped the ante in her alimony suit against him.

*(American informal) If you ante up an amount of money, you pay your share, sometimes unwillingly: Paul Reichmann offered to ante up $3million.

*To increase your demands and try to get more things from a situation, even though this involves more risks: They’ve upped the ante by making a $120 million bid to buy the company.
