*When you allow for something such as a problem, delay, or expense in your planning, you make sure that you have enough time, money, or resources in order to deal with it if it occurs: If you are self-employed, allow for tax and national insurance. # Long-term fixed-price contracts which did not allow for the escalation of costs.

*To consider something when making a plan or calculation: The cost of the new road, allowing for inflation, is around $34 million. # The survey does not allow for the fact that some students are attending part-time.

*To consider the possible facts, problems, costs, etc. involved in something when making a plan, calculation, or judgement: Allowing for inflation, the cost of the project will be $2 million. # You should always allow for the possibility that it might rain.

*If you allow for something that does not yet exist, you take action or make plans so that it will be possible: Pasta can be frozen, but should be undercooked to allow for reheating. # His original plans allowed for meadows and a lake for recreation.

*To include sb/sth when calculating something: It will take about an hour to get there, allowing for traffic delays. # All these factors must be allowed for.
